As we ate our breakfast at the Glengarry Guest House, the rain was hammering on the windows, and after a little thought, two of our party, Big John & Patrick decided to take a day off. Patrick had developed some blisters while John had some doubts about walking 20 miles or so and the foul weather was enough to sway him. Fortunately, by the time the rest of us were booted and suited, the downpour had settled to light rain which in turn changed to showery weather which persisted throughout the day. Even though it was a wet day I found in the main that the walking was pleasant for the most part and I was looking forward to crossing Rannoch Moor but first we had several miles of wet soggy moorland to cover. Unfortunately my camera had by this time succumbed to the wet and most of my photos were spoiled by misted lens. When we reached the bridge of Orchy we were hoping for a coffee but the place was like a ghost town, the only sign of life was a long goods train standing in the station. We pushed on to Inveroran where we found the bar to be open and packed to the rafters with ramblers of all nationality's. What a pity the worlds leaders can't meet up somewhere like this and put the world to rights.
After our refreshments we set out again and began the long trek across Rannoch Moor which to be honest was a little disappointing to me as I was expecting something more of a challenge. Perhaps if the weather had been better I would have enjoyed the experience more. The end of this days walk was supposed to be at Kings House but due to refurbishment, Macs adventures had arranged for a minibus to pick us up at the Winter sports centre to take us to our lodging for the night. While we waited we drank some excellent hot chocolate which by this time was very welcome indeed. The minibus took us to the Strathassynt guest house in Ballachulish, where the gentleman who met us at the door had a very offhand manner which persisted throughout our stay. To be fair though, the accommodation was fine and the breakfast was perfect. Big John and Patrick rejoined us shortly after we arrived and Patrick told us that he had seen a doctor about his blisters and on his advice would be travelling home the next day.
That evening the only place open for a meal was a Fish / Pizza type place which served us a very mediocre portion of Fish & Chips. we then went into the pub next door for a pint in very dismal surroundings. Ballachulish is not my favourite town in Scotland.
