After an excellent breakfast at the guest house we said our goodbyes to hosts, Scott and Colin and began to retrace our steps towards the WHW It was still damp from the day before and a little cooler but within a half hour or so the sun had begun to break through and soon we were putting our waterproofs away. Once again we had a steady uphill trek, this time through Garadhban forest plantation until eventually we left it behind and were rewarded with our first distant view of Loch Lomond and the Highlands beyond. Our target was now 'Conic Hill' and as we drew near we could see the long climb leading to the right hand side of what was to be the only real hill that we had to tackle all day. The main footpath went around the shoulder but there was another one which branched off to the left and on to the summit. The view from the top was fantastic, taking in much of Loch Lomond with the islands & highlands in the distance. The summit was quite crowded which for some reason surprised me but having said that the popular village of Balmaha is only a short distance away and a lot of folk would have come from that direction.
We stopped for lunch at the Oak Tree Inn before starting out again passing by Tom Wier's statue following a path which led around Balmaha's attractive little harbour and into the woods beyond, never far from the Lochside. We were rewarded with many open views and photo opportunities as we walked.
All too soon we reached our hotel at Rowardennan and our first impression was very good although we had to wait a while for a receptionist to turn up to allocate our rooms which were first class. Unfortunately the restaurant let the establishment down.
